Features To Look For Which Are Most Desirable In Waterfront Homes

Living on the water, whether it is a lake, a river, or the ocean, is often very desirable. It is also desirable from the standpoint that it means that you have wealth enough to afford a home on the edge of a waterway. However, in your search for a waterfront home of your own, you should also be looking for certain features of the property, which are most desirable and which add quite a bit of value to the property overall.

Your Own Dock

If you cannot tie your own boat or secure your own jet skis to your property, it means that you will have to build these features. Building these features after you buy the property could cost you thousands of dollars more, a factor that may make that home less attractive. You should at least have tie-down pylons in the water or on land if there is no actual dock.

Your Own Boathouse

Maybe you have already toured a few properties that have this feature. It looks like a garage, but it is situated in the water and built into an embankment on your property. Like garages on land, it opens with a garage door opener and remote control. Drive your boat or jet skis in and out of the boathouse all season long without ever having to pay a single mooring fee or storage fee.

If you live where the water freezes up in winter, you can either keep heaters in the water in your boathouse, or you can lift the boat out of the water in your own dry dock space within the boathouse itself. Having this on your property saves you hundreds of dollars every year in mooring and dry dock fees, and you never have to take the boat or skis out of the water and move them anywhere else. You launch your own watercraft from your own boathouse on your own waterfront property.

Reinforced Embankment and Protective Features

Approaching the water, you want to be sure that you are not going to step close to the water and then suddenly slide off the bank and into the water. A reinforced embankment, or at least a bank that has anti-erosion features installed, is what you want. The very best option is a stone wall up the embankment ending in a wide sidewalk where you can sit and enjoy the view. It is also a good idea to have a protective fence and gate to keep young children from falling into the water.
