3 Reasons To Ditch The Open Floor Plan When Having A New Home Built

Posted on: 31 August 2019

If you're like most people who are going to be having a home built soon, you're probably really looking forward to living a house that features new construction. However, before you opt for an open concept design plan, you should consider the following three points — despite its current popularity, this type of home is not for everyone.

You're a Serious Home Cook

If you enjoy cooking from scratch in your home kitchen and do so for most meals, an open-concept kitchen probably isn't the greatest idea. It's hard to beat a kitchen with a door that closes that you can close — for instance, spending all afternoon on food preparation tasks can be a relaxing and enjoyable way to spend the time, but do you really want to do so with the distraction of whatever is going on in the living room right under your nose? Perhaps you'd like to cook while listening to your favorite music but can't do so because other household members are watching a sporting event or movie on the big screen television in the living room.

If you share your household with furry friends, you're probably all-too-familiar with their propensity to be underfoot whenever you're busy in the kitchen — and perhaps you've even tripped over them as they rub against your legs looking for a tasty handout. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to simply close a door and keep them out of the room? As an added benefit, your kitchen won't be available for scrutiny by casual visitors — as you probably already know, the kitchen of a serious home cook is rarely in pristine, visitor-ready condition.

You Like Saving Money on Utility Costs

Open concept homes require heating and cooling large spaces, and this can cause utility costs to skyrocket. In a home with actual rooms, on the other hand, you can simply turn the heat or AC off in those rooms that aren't being used, which will cut down substantially on energy loss. It's also much easier to keep smaller rooms warm when outdoor temperatures are cold.

You Like Privacy

If you're the type of person who enjoys curling up with a good book or watching a movie without the inherent distractions of sharing a home with other people, an open concept floor plan is definitely not for you. Most people tend to function better when they've got a private space to recoup, recharge, and relax on their own terms.
